KANYE WEST NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION LAUNCHES FREE MUSIC WRITING PROGRAM FOR CHICAGO YOUTH
Kanye West’s nonprofit Donda’s House has launched a free music writing program in order to help at-risk youth on Chicago’s South Side. As WBEZ is pointing out, the program is called “Got Bars?” and is to set to teach students between 15 and 24 how to write and record their own music over the course of ten weeks. Donda’s House Executive Director Donnie Smith: “Art instruction and particularly music instruction leads people to become better problem solvers, more flexible. “There are just so many outcomes that come from the study of music and particularly music writing.” As for the targeted demographic, Smith added: We think that 15 to 24-year-olds…they are in the most need of help. We want to get kids in high school, that young adult age range who are confused about where they are in life. We want to give them direction… so many people have just given up on that demographic. And I would add that Dr. Donda West was passionate about the high school dropout rate. We want to be working to help with that at the younger age of that spectrum. Donda’s House also hinted at plans to make it a national program.
