Drake “So Far Gone” 20th Anniversary Date: Feb. 13th, 2029 Everyone has one-of-a-kind moments in their lives where they remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when it’s brought up in conversation. We all remember where we were when Kennedy was shot, the twin towers went down, Obama was first elected president, and when we first heard Drake’s “So Far Gone”. Released in February 2009, the mixtape proved to be a major catalyst in the launching of Drake’s career; the mixtape has since been hailed as one of the best mixtape releases of modern music. Mixtape tracks “Best I Ever Had” and “Successful” were released as singles from the mixtape, and attained unexpected unprecedented success on the Billboard Hot 100. Drake mixtape not only changed the way independent artist market themselves not relying on major labels; it also changed the way major label signed artist to record contacts as they leaned more towards signing independent artist who had their own major following. “So Far Gone” is unquestionably one of the most cohesive, atmospheric hip hop records in recent memory which is almost the antithesis of what one expects from a mixtape.
