STYLIST SEAN JULIAN TALKS SPORTS FASHION, NYFW, & MORE W/KABOOM! MAGAZINE.COM
LOOK GOOD, PLAY GOOD! This motto not only works on the athletic field, but in the boardroom as well. Sean Julian is a 25 years old graduate from The Art Institute of Indianapolis with a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Retail Management. Sean currently lives in New York City & works for Saks Fifth Avenue as the Men’s Shoes Brand Ambassador, Creed Fragrances Brand Ambassador & Image Consultant. Serving as an Image Consultant, Sean has worked with many professional athletes, top business professionals all the way to students straight from undergrad who want to spruce up their personal image! Today, Kaboom! Magazine.com got the chance to talk with Sean, where he told us where his style came from, what he thinks about style in professional sports today, and shares with us the secret to his success.   Kaboom!:  We’re you a stylish kid growing up? SJ: I would like to believe so, to a certain extent. My style obviously back then is way different that it is at the moment. However, fundamentally, having an eye for matching and putting ensembles together is much of the same. From an urban style to a polished gentleman is what I like to call the transition.   Kaboom!:  When did you know you wanted to get into the fashion industry? SJ: It basically just happened in a sense. From having various retail fashion jobs to owning online consignment stores, I found myself in one way or another always fascinated with the industry and sought after many different career paths I could take within the industry.   Kaboom!:  What inspires your work?  SJ:Inspiration for my work comes from numerous places. I would have to say everyday normal people really inspire me from those on the streets of New York to those I see across the world on street style blogs. They’re so many different, interesting individuals, all with their own unique style. I like to take what I see from maybe the street and pieces shown on the runway and relate to myself and to my clients.  Architecture, color, texture, fine fabrics, modern and ancient design are all other inspirational aspects to my work. IMG_2041 Kaboom!:  What inspired you to become a stylist and not a designer first? SJ: Well actually, I went to The Academy of Art University to study fashion design initially. Upon going through the program, I discovered while I respected and admired the design aspect, I was drawn to the business side in a creative way as well. Styling was a creative component that still let me have a canvas, without some of all the technical aspects.   Kaboom!:  Who do you think is the best dressed currently in sports? SJ: Overall best dressed, I’d have to say LeBron James. From his dressed up looks to casual looks, I just think he gets it for his body type.   Kaboom!:  What do you think young athletes can learn from seeing old photos of athletes like Walt Frazier, Derek Jeter, and Michael Jordan? SJ: They can learn to dress from themselves and no one else. You can definitely see from the likes of Walt Frazier, that it hasn’t ever mattered what people think of his ensembles, that he’ll continue to wear what desires. You see that from many of the younger athletes like Russell Westbrook.   Kaboom!: What are some of the mistakes young athletes make when it comes to fashion? SJ: Big mistake I often see are athletes not dressing for their particular body types. Just because they’re an athlete doesn’t mean you can’t wear a tailored suit. Oversized, blousy suits are something I see on many athletes and I continue to have a hard time understanding why. If you’re a professional athlete, you can definitely afford to have a custom suit, if you don’t want to shell out the money on that, then find a good tailor to have your suits to simply fit you. IMG_2255 Kaboom!: Do you think that players play better when they dress better? SJ: ABSOLUTELY! This is actually one of my mantras that I have for all of my clients, not specifically for athletes. The better you dress, the more confident you’ll feel, the better you’ll ultimately perform. This correlates to any field, from the athlete who walks into a stadium or arena confident to a businessman who is about to present to potential investors. The better you look, the better you’ll perform.   Kaboom!: Who has been your favorite clients to work with so far, and who haven’t you worked with yet that you would like to? SJ: Tough to say, so I won’t. However, I would love to work with Andrew Luck, give my spin to Russell Westbrook’s style and Odell Beckham Jr.   Kaboom!:  Name some style icons that you are inspired by? SJ: I’m inspired by many different individuals past and present, in different fields as well. From Michael Jackson being one of my main style icons to Kanye West, Pharrell Williams to the influential designers: Tom Ford, Karl Lagerfeld, Hedi Slimane and Olivier Rousteing.   Kaboom!:  Are there any stylist that you personally admire? SJ: I admire every one that is a true stylist, one that has a vision and overall image for their clients, because being a “stylist” finding inspiration and fresh looks constantly can become very challenging. Not many know the true work it takes to become a stylist in the industry, many think due to social media that you can put some collages together on picstitch and boom, you’re a stylist. Which is definitely not the case.   Kaboom!:  Did you always see yourself becoming this successful? SJ: Absolutely, because I’ve put the work in to to become successful. I also believe, that I’m just starting to see my true potential. Without a doubt, I have a long way to go until I can really truly call myself successful, but I’m on my way!   Kaboom!: What is a normal day like in the life of Sean Julian? SJ: This would depend on if I’m dealing with a physical client that I’m meeting with or if I’m styling for a particular event, where I’d have to send the merchandise to them. When I’m physically with them, I make sure all fitting rooms and all the merchandise is ready with sizes, accessories, etc.. Usually, I have lunch or dinner with the client, prior to the appointment as well. If the client isn’t present, I usually make sure that I’ve sent pictures of the entire ensemble and have every piece needed for the outfit. Verify shipping addresses and make sure that everything is sent out as should be.   Kaboom!:  How was your experience at New York Fashion Week? SJ: The experience is always great. Seeing the latest collection, attending the events and seeing some of the collections live in person is always amazing. Having a relationship with some of the vendors allowing me to preview the current collection and upcoming collection, before it hits retail is always a blast.   Kaboom!: What knowledge can a stylist gain by attending NYFW?  SJ: A stylist can gain the experience of seeing the latest collections from the upcoming season, enjoying street style from some of the best dressed individuals in the industry, celebrity sightings and not to mention the many parties and events that go on during NYFW.
