AMIR KHAN DEFEATS CHRIS ALGIERI & CALLS OUT FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR.
Amir Khan scored a closer-than-expected unanimous-decision win over Chris Algieri on Friday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Scores were 117-111, 117-111 and 115-113, all for Khan. Khan (31-3, 19 KO) looked to use his huge speed advantage in the early rounds by countering Algieri, who, under the tutelage of new trainer John David Jackson, seemed determined to erase the memory of his lopsided loss to Manny Pacquiao last November. Algieri (20-2, 8 KO) was the aggressor throughout the fight, and he had moments of success in the first half, while Khan remained somewhat tentative and content to move around the ring and dominate from the outside. Many among the ringside media saw an even or close-to-even fight at the midway point, but it was Khan who took over down the stretch as Algieri tired when attempting to put together the pieces in a fight he hopes will lead him to bigger and better things later in the year. Khan minced no words in his post-fight interview, calling out pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather.
