They’ve kept us glued to our TV screens, kept us posting memes all day on social media, and helped us get through another grueling school or work week. But which celebs had the best week of them all? Today, Kaboom! Magazine.com lets you know who’s star shined the brightest this past week in “Top 10 People of the Week.” Each week, Kaboom! picks 10 celebs, athletes, entertainers, or regular people who we feel had the best week of them all. This week, our countdown is filled with some of record-setting performers, powerball winners, and emerging athletes.10. Jimmy Butler
Leading off the countdown this week is one of the emerging superstars in the NBA. Chicago Bulls shooting guard Jimmy Butler scored 53 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out six assists in the Bulls’ 115-111 overtime victory. The numbers put the 30th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft in some rare company. Only Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant have been able to put up those types of numbers in a game since 1985. Butler’s effort caught the eye of actor Mark Wahlberg, whom helped his 2016 NBA all-star case by tweeting his fans to cast their votes for Jimmy. Voting for the NBA All-Star Game ends Jan. 18.
A newcomer in more ways than one enters the No. 9 spot of the countdown this week, but we have a feeling that he will be making more appearances in 2016. Anderson.Paak burst onto the music scene in 2015 when he surprised everyone by being featured on the entire Dr. Dre “Compton” album. This week, he built on that momentum with the release of his new album entitled “Malibu.” Paak second full-length album, is a bracing wash of warm neo-soul that spits in the face of the chilly self-flagellation The Weeknd managed to spin into chart gold. “Malibu” defies categorization, which is a testament to Paak’s versatility and his willingness to take detours.
8. Deontay Wilder
Knocking out the competition at the No. 8 spot of the countdown is actually one of the baddest men on the planet heavyweight boxer Deontay Wilder. After a competitive nine-plus rounds, the WBC world heavyweight champion obliterated Artur Szpilka with a right hand from hell Saturday night in Brooklyn, New York, at Barclays Center. The punch landed flush on the Polish contender’s chin, and he flopped to the canvas. Wilder is currently undefeated with a 36-0 record with 35 knockouts, he’s currently on a collision course to fight fellow heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, who was also at the fight this weekend.
DMV music superstar made history this week, earning him a spot on the countdown at No. 7. Wale made history by being the first rapper to open up for the President’s State of Union. Wale’s performance has been trending ever since which is probably why he took the advantage to announce his fifth studio album, “Shine.” No details on release date yet. But that’s not all, shortly after he also dropped a new track called “Powerball.”
6. Rob Gronkowski
Rob Gronkowski is not only winning on the football field right now, but he’s also winning on this week countdown at No. 6. The New England Patriots star set another record Saturday in the New England Patriots’ Divisional round victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, catching his eighth career postseason touchdown, surpassing the previous mark of seven shared by Vernon Davis and Dave Casper.
5. Stan Kroneke
Not only is football moving back to Los Angeles, but it also moving into the No. 5 spot on the countdown this week. National Football League owners voted Tuesday to approve the relocation bid of the St. Louis Rams, which paves the way for the return of pro football to the Los Angeles area in 2016. When the owner Stan Kroneke first said the words “Los Angeles Rams,” those fans erupted in wild cheers. The Rams played in southern California for 49 seasons before owner Georgia Frontiere moved them after the 1994 campaign. Kroenke won the three-team derby to return to the nation’s second-largest market earlier this week, enticing NFL owners with his impressive stadium plans and his team’s ties to Los Angeles, where thousands of fans stayed true to the Rams during two decades away.
4. Chino Hills Powerball Winners
A mysterious billionaire from Chino Hills graces us with their presence this week at No. 4. The main topic on everyone minds this week was the $1.6 billion powerball lottery. Wednesday night’s record-breaking drawing had three winners, according to California Lottery. Celebrations continued Thursday at a Chino Hills 7-Eleven where one of three winning Powerball tickets was sold as the wait continued for the winning ticket-holder to come forward. Each winner will receive $327.8 million before taxes if they opt for the lump-sum payment, or $528.8 million total if they choose the installment plan which gives money to the recipient annually for 30 years, according to Alex Traverso with the California Lottery. Federal taxes will take 25 percent of the money, according to the agency. Chino Hills store owner Balbir Atwal was presented with a $1 million check on Thursday in front of a cheering crowd.
Representing the No. 3 spot this week are some hip-hop pioneers who are finally receiving the recognition they deserve. Run-DMC is about to make history once again, and this time at the 2016 GRAMMY’s. According to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the legendary hip-hop group will be receiving a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award. Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and the late Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell will be the first hip-hop artists to ever receive the award. Congratulations to Run-DMC, and tune in next month for the show on Sunday, February 15.
2. Kendrick Lamar
The No. 1 rapper in the game right now had a week that he will never forget, which earned him the No. 2 spot on our countdown. TDE rap god Kendrick Lamar was personally invited to Washington D.C. to visit President Obama at his place of residence. It is well known that both men are very fans of one another and Obama has even gone on record to say that he prefers Lamar over Drake. Later on in the week, it was announced that K-Dot would be receiving the key to his hometown of Compton, CA.
1. Barack Obama
It may have taken him 8 years to land this spot on the countdown, but this week No. 1 spot will be occupied by none other than the commander & chief himself Barack Obama. President Barack Obama presented a range of statistics designed to show his economic record in a positive light during his final State of the Union address. He kicked it off with this assertion: “The United States of America, right now, has the strongest, most durable economy in the world.” We’ll miss his graceful style and an undervalued record of achievement that – with a year to go — has already put him in the ranks of fine American Presidents.
