Nice Whips: Honda Civic Type R

Nice Whips: Honda Civic Type R

After much speculation about the stateside release of the Honda Civic Type R prototype, rumors and anticipation, Honda has finally dropped official images of the production version of the Civic Type R. Covered in what looks like the iconic Championship White that has donned many Type R’s before it, this 4-door hot hatch carries over many of the aesthetic lines that the matte black prototype had and then some. The production model also keeps the 20-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, triple exhaust centered in the rear diffuser, and large wing. While the photos show European license plate dimensions, because the car is a European model, it is believed the U.S. version – the first ever Type R badged Honda to be sold on American soil – will sport the same look.

Coupled with a 2-liter i-VTEC engine capable of putting out 306 horsepower with 295 lb-ft. of torque, the FWD machine will host a limited slip differential with a six-speed manual transmission. Various driving modes will include Comfort, Sport and +R and are said to be able to change damper, steering, throttle response, transmission rev matching, VSA and traction control. When compared with its older siblings, this iteration of the Civic Type R has 38% more torsional rigidity, 45% more bending rigidity and is 35 pounds lighter, making it track ready from the factory. A black interior features red accents in the form of bucket seats, trim and dash. Carbon fiber accented door panels and dash, nav, 12 speaker 540-watt audio system and official aluminum car model number designation plate round out the insides.

The car will officially debut at the New York International Auto Show in mid-April and is set to have a starting price tag in the mid-$30K.
