Common Lands Starring Role In Starz “Black Samurai”

While falling outside the overall deal between Jerry Bruckheimer TV and CBS Studios, Starz snagged the action drama series. Black Samurai (working title) will star Common, who also serves as the projects executive producer.

Alongside Jerry Bruckheimer Television is Wu Tan Clan member, RZA’s, Wu Films as well as Common’s Freedom Road Productions which originated the project a year ago.

The president of programming forStarz, Carmi Zlotnik, described the Common’s role as, part Jason Bourne, part James Bond, and 100% the hero we need today. He continues by adding:

“Black Samurai promises to be an action-packed ride and with the Bruckheimer team, Common, RZA and Andre at the helm, we can feel certain this will be exceptional storytelling.”

The Starz series will serve as the updated version from the original novel and film in 1977.

The drama series follows the story of Robert Sand (Common). After meeting a legendary Japanese master, an American Army Ranger is invited to train as a samurai. Following the demise of his beloved sensei and samurai brothers at the hand of mercenaries, Sand goes on a worldwide quest for both revenge and self-discovery.
